New pool complex opens at Grand National | News
OPELIKA, AL (WTVM)- When golfers from around the country are looking to tee it up, they go to Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National in Opelika.
For twenty years, Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National has been drawing millions of golfers to east Alabama, but the golf course has brought more than just sport to the area. Officials say it has also brought millions of dollars.
"We have people from California, Chicago, Canada, all over the United States, and outside the United States. We even have a couples' tournament in the fall here and we usually have 30 or 40 states represented just alone in that event," said Scott Gomberg, Director of Golf.
Now, the Auburn/Opelika Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at Grand National is celebrating a new addition that experts say will bring in even more people.
Area leaders as well as U.S. Olympic gold medalist Mark Gangloff welcomed this new pool complex to the community.
The facility includes three saltwater pools, a new splash bar, whirlpools, waterfalls, fire-pits, and nightly fog and light shows.
"I believe you would have to travel all the way down into some of the resort areas of Florida to see anything like this," said Jay Prater, General Manager of the Auburn/Opelika Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at Grand National.
"So, we hope that the people in our general area would love to come out and experience this and save the money they would spend going to the beach and enjoy a facility that they can't get anywhere else in our general area."
Experts say every year, millions of dollars have been brought into Lee County because of the golf trail and this resort. Now, with the new pool complex and a new tennis courts in the works, John Wild with the Auburn/Opelika Bureau of Tourism says it can only get better.
"It is very, very crucial to our local economy," Wild said. "Adding something like this just puts a whole new perspective on it. Groups love staying here, but this is just another super amenity that will open the door for so many other groups that would love to come here."
